Susan L. Phillips graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a 3.9 grade point average in 1971. She completed majors in English, Psychology, and Sociology as an undergraduate and received a Master's Degree in Sociology at the same institution. While a graduate student, she taught sections of a course called “Editing for Social Scientist” in the UCB
English Department and sections of a course on research reports in the UCB Department of Mass Communications. In addition, she co-authored or authored articles published in professional Sociology and Psychology journals and made contributions to a sociological book while still a graduate student. After receiving her Master's Degree, she made contributions to articles published in professional Medical journals; authored magazine, newsletter, and newspaper articles; and wrote successful grant proposals over a period of 40 years.
Ms. Phillips has been semi-retired for 6 years. During this latter period, she has tutored students in writing and has again worked as a freelance editor. She recently taught an online course called “Self-Editing,” and she is currently teaching a course in literary analysis to high school students.
